Woman Inventors

Who do you think is an inventor?  Benjamin Franklin who invented the lightning rod? Or Thomas Edison who supposedly invented the light bulb (he didn’t really)?  What about the women inventors like Ruth Wakefield?  I believe that some of the greatest inventors in American history have been women.

Let’s start with Ruth Wakefield.  Her invention came by accident.  One day when she was making cookies she found that she was out of baker’s chocolate.  But she had some Nestle chocolate so she crumbled it up and put it on top of her cookies but instead of melting over her cookies they just sank into the batter.  Ruth was disappointed but everyone who tried the cookies loved them!  And so the chocolate chip cookie was born.

Next up is Bette Nesmith Graham.  She lived and worked when electric typewriters were first produced.  Though the new machines were faster it was a lot harder to fix mistakes with them, because before with manual typewriters mistakes could be fixed whit an eraser.  This was no longer the case.  So in her kitchen Bette invented a white paint-like-substance she called liquid paper.  Late her mixture was refined to make White-Out which many people still use today.

How about a less know product.  Martha Coston invented a signaling system know as maritime signal flares.   Her husband, a naval scientist, had come up with an idea for the signaling devices but Martha made an improvement on her own.  She made a system of colors and color combinations that relayed different signals.  Her changes saved lives and helped win wars.

Aren’t these women awesome?  Whether their inventions were accidents or changes to a design they have all made people’s lives better.  I guess sometimes women are the best inventors of all.

Leave a comment about your favorite inventor and I might write about them.
