Fever 1793

Author's Note: For a journal in LA class we have to retell a meaningful scene and explain why it is important. Spoiler alert for Fever 1793!

After Mattie's grandfather dies she is lost, floating in her sorrow. The only person she knows in Philadelphia is now Eliza, the woman her mother hired in the coffeehouse. So Mattie sets out to find her. On the way Mattie meets Nell, a fever orphan. Mattie ends up taking Nell with her on her search, though planning to take her to the orphanage as soon as she could.

This scene is important because if Mattie hadn't found Nell she may never have been able to get over her grief. Mattie just needed something,or someone, to focus on so she could leave behind the pain. Without Nell Mattie wouldn't have an opportunity to mature into the independent woman she ends up being.
